Music retailers have responded to the stickers put on Chris Brown CDs, warning customers of the singer’s domestic violence charges.
Yesterday we reported on the appearance of warning stickers on Chris Brown’s latest album Fortune, which said “Do Not Buy This Album! Warning: This Man Beats Women", today, HMV has responded, stating that the stunt may have had the opposite to the intended effect.
A spokesperson from the chain has said: “I guess they got their point across pretty effectively – with widespread coverage around the world, though, by the same token, quite a few more people now know there’s a new Chris Brown album out.” The labels, which appeared over the weekend (September 15) were quickly taken down by staff, but not before a picture was released online.
The singer first drew negative attention in 2009 when it was revealed that he had beaten girlfriend Rihanna, and following his recent tattoo of what looks like the face of a beaten women on his neck, this latest stunt is sure to display the negativity still directed at Brown. However, the publicity gained from Brown’s personal career, as well as this warning to costumers, is sure to have upped the profile of the singer, whose career has so far gone relatively undamaged.
