"David Bowie Is" in London

Other | Tuesday 4th September 2012 | Osh

The music and fashion icon’s archive will be opened to the public for the first time in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The musician’s retrospective, organized by V&A museum in association with Italian fashion house Gucci,  will include more than 60 costumes such as iconic Ziggy Stardust bodysuits designed by Freddie Burretti in 1972, Kansai Yamamoto's creations for the 1973 Aladdin Sane tour, and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the Earthling album cover in 1997. Gucci creative director, Frida Giannini, said that Bowie is one of her greatest inspirations, as: "His individuality, originality and authenticity have been defining. Through his creative genius his influence on music, fashion, art and popular culture over decades has been immeasurable and will continue to be for decades to come."

The exhibition which starts with David Robert Jones´ (Bowie’s real name) first years, is a reflection of the artist’s passion for all cultural aspects, especially British culture, with a special section featuring London “as a source of inspiration in his work”. We can also find over 300 objects including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie's own instruments and album artwork. The director of V&A museum said: "His radical innovations across music, theatre, fashion and style still resound today in design and visual culture and he continues to inspire artists and designers throughout the world." Bowie wasn’t involved in the curating of the exposition, he just opened his doors, and the V&A curators made all the curatorial and design choices.

The show, which opens to the public from March 23 to July 28, 2013, finishes with an exposition of mythic performance and fashion photography by artists like Helmut Newton and Herb Ritts.
