The Great Gatsby expected to be the 2013’s summer blockbuster

The new Moulin Rouge director’s movie was planned to be released at the end of the year, but has been delayed for economic reasons.

The film, directed by Baz Luhrmann and staring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan amongst others, is a 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 masterpiece about a Midwestern would-be writer who travels to NY in the early 20’s chasing the American Dream. There he meets Gatsby, his party-giving millionaire neighbor and gets caught by fascination for his mysterious past and lifestyle, becoming a witness to obsession and tragedy. Since the novel was published, there have been at least five film adaptations, an operatic interpretation and numerous stage adaptations.

Baz Luhrman's $120m film version, which was set to open Christmas Day, apparently overpassed all Warner Bros expectations and it’s now seen as the next summer blockbuster. International distribution president Veronika Kwan Vandenberg said: "It truly brings Fitzgerald's American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exiting way. We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible."

This strategic move is based in the thought that December is the favorite month for Oscar-chasing productions and family comedies, whereas summer leaves more space for this film to bright and make blockbuster-level money. Warner Bros used the same strategy the last two summers releasing the final chapters of giant money-making franchises as the last film in the Harry Potter series in July 2011 and conclusion of the Batman series last month.

The stars of this movie, DiCaprio and Maguire, are already dealing with upcoming projects as sources informed The Hollywood Reporter. They are willing to produce, teaming up with Tom Hardy, an animal-trafficking drama set up also at Warner Bros. The movie will portray “everything from the ground war on poachers in the African savanna to how animal material ends up in the fashion houses of Paris”.
