Patti Smith and her band will be presenting their new album Banga in London

Other | Wednesday 22nd August 2012 | Osh

Patti Smith, also known as The Godmother of Punk, is back in town with new material. The 65-year-old artist still in good shape, and after a few years of silence she felt the necessity to “talk through her songs” again. The result is her 11th album Banga, which she named as a tribute to the dog of Bulkágov’s novel The Master and Margarita. This album has received critical acclaim even quoted as her best work after her album Horses released in 1975 and The Guardian said it’s "a mixture of pop songs and poetic explorations” in which "collision of sound and language is exhilarating”. The concert, which will take place the 13th of September in Troxy venue, is the conclusion to a 40-date European tour.

Smith says of Banga, “It’s a reflection about our complex world, of chaos and beauty inspired in my dreams observations”. Her song Fuji-san, which is a rock song in tribute to the people of Japan following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, is a good example of it. But this work, full of poetry and world consciousness, also includes tributes to other artists such as her theme This Is the Girl, a poem she wrote dedicated to Amy Winehouse that became a tender song about the artist; Nine, a birthday song dedicated to her friend Johnny Depp and a cover of Neil Young's hit After the gold rush which closes up the album.
