Government to launch new scheme of growing and distributing its own cannabis
Uruguay have sent a bill to congress proposing that they would be allowed to grow and sell its own marijuana in a bid to reduce crime associated with drug trafficking.
Already being legal to use, Uruguay has established itself as one of the safest countries in South America that isn’t shy to experiment with liberal lawmaking, yet there continues to be problems surrounding the black market and the distribution of narcotics.
Registered consumers would be allowed to purchase up to 30 grams per month (just under an ounce) and visitors would not be allowed to buy any cannabis, so the small country won’t become the next hot-spot for drug tourists.
The state's new role as official pot grower and distributor will be carried out "exclusively in the framework of a policy of damage reduction, while at the same time alerting the public to the dangers of using (the drug)", according to the bill.
