Colorado shootings- Is it really a surprise?

A real dark-knight would have come in useful in Colorado last night as James Holmes, a 6ft, masked gunman, killed 14 people and injured a further 50 people at the midnight showing of the Dark Knight Rises. The long-awaited summer blockbuster brought in a large crowd at the night projection in Aurora, Colorado, when the 24 year-old man, dressed in all black with a gas mask and bulletproof vest carried out his vicious attack.
He burst in through the emergency exit of the cinemas and opened fire, shooting people at random. Some witnesses have even said that they thought it was part of the movie but the horrific incident has now led to 10 bodies being found in the cinema, most of which are children, teenagers and even a 3 month old baby.
However, here is the big question to ask, what else can we expect from a state where no state permit is required for the purchase of a handgun, shotgun or rifle?
So we have a crazy bastard, thinking he’s Batman (or The Joker) wearing a gas mask and bulletproof vest. What does the Colorado State give this psychopath? A rifle, 2 hand-guns and a shot gun. This is the law in Colorado, so is it really a surprise when 14 people are shot dead and a further 50 are injured?
According to the state laws of Colorado, people like James Holmes are legally allowed to buy guns and rifles whilst the government sits back and does nothing. The local government is actually prohibited from keeping a record of the all the people who purchase or exchange firearm so they don’t even have on record the people who own guns and rifles.
It does make one think, why would America allow its people to purchase firearms? With the exception of Illinois, all other states allow its citizens to openly carry firearms as they go about their day to day lives. This is the law in America so I don’t think it comes as surprise when 14 people are shot dead during a trip to the cinemas.
