The Football/Politics Mix

There are three different types of football supporters.
Avid - We all know one of these, when football ceases to be a hobby or an interest and takes on religious qualities.
Moderate - Someone who catches the odd game and doesnt refuse a trip to the local to watch an ‘important game’ if there is an alcoholic beverage on offer.
Glory - Their interest is more about uniting for a cause (usually for their national team) and these supporters (don’t hate me for saying it) are usually women.
However you feel about the game of football you do well to dodge its influence on society and you’re an expert if you can fail to flick onto a match on terrestrial television.
I would most definitely consider myself a glory supporter and as i stood in Bar Kick, Shoreditch last night (19th June) surrounded by white collars clutching the latest drinks deal as they craned their necks to try and catch a glimpse of England v Ukraine, i couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride.
There is nothing like the atmosphere that’s created by a group of people coming together for the same cause, whether it be sport, music or maybe even a party.
Sharing a cause and all longing for the same outcome can most definitely lift your mood and in last night’s case, in some ways, remind you of what it means to be British.
Just like anything, football comes with its fair share of underlying issues.
Reports are currently emerging that ministers from the UK will not be attending the semi final match that England will be playing on Sunday (24th June) against Italy.
Due to the politicians busy schedule and the up and coming Olympics this summer the ministers said in advance that they wouldn’t be attending the group stages of the tournament and that the later stages were under review.
When asked about the minister's attendance at the football games in Ukraine over the Euro 2012 tournament, William Hague said that the Ukraine has ‘serious problems’ and they didn’t want attendance at the tournament to be interpreted as ‘political support to issues that have arisen in the Ukraine that the UK don’t agree with’.
There’s nothing like country rivalry to rain on our Euro 2012 parade. Politics and football as far as we’re concerned here at the guestlist network should be separate issues, so get down to your local and join the rest of the country in what promises to be an exciting tournament. If your not into football then its a great excuse to prop up the bar for a couple of hours.
