A Note For Feminism Everywhere: Nicki Minaj

RnB/Hip Hop | Thursday 7th June 2012 | Osh

One of our favourite ladies from Cash Money Records is on top of feminism and fighting for the women’s voice.

You should never slate a ladies’ music especially when you want her to perform for you. Respect for the artists we listen to should be paramount. If you don’t like their music then it’s still all about respecting them as artists; their ability for making it so far. Nicki Minaj will not be gracing anyone with her presence at the Hot 97 Summer Jam Gig after DJ Peter Rosenberg felt like calling ‘Starships’ not real hip hop. Talk about taking a massive poo on yourself; the gig has now lost a phenomenal singer that could cost them many dedicated fans.

Nicki was targeted out of the entire line up in which she was the only female performer. In fact, Nicki wanted to go through with the gig and perform to stand up for women. However, that’s not her decision to make as her manager (Lil Wayne) pulled out as his artists should be given more respect. This form of harassment is a slight insight into the world of equality and how even famous artists have to deal with it.

Not only are female singers an on-going success but in the music industry this is a major accomplishment. No one thinks twice about the success of these women compared to men, here is the one industry in which it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what gender you are, so long as you can sing and know how to market yourself you could get worldwide recognition. It is disappointing that Nicki was possibly targeted because she is female. Hopefully it was simply because of the DJs own personal (wrong) opinion. (Not that an opinion is right or wrong… unless I don’t agree with it!).

If you appreciate her music and her female status then look forward to the 24th and 25th of June, when Nicki will be performing at the Hammersmith Apollo as part of her Roman Reloaded tour.
