Some DJs follow trends, some never get themselves out of the groove of the same sound, and others crank out an unvaried DJ mix crammed with chart-toppers every few months. With a sense of unpredictability and productions that continually raise the bar, techno innovator Marco Carola has always fought the urge to fit into any of the above.
Born in Naples, Italy, Carola has emerged in the last four years as one of the city’’s most influential exponents of Techno and electronic music. He took up the drums at an early age and by 15 was concentrating on electronic and house music. By 1993 Carola had put together his own studio and was issuing tracks for several different labels until he launched his own record company, Design Music, in 1996 (one of the first Italy-based techno-based labels). Ensuing tours of Australia, Europe, and America soon followed, resulting in such releases as 1998's Fokus and 2001's Open Systems, the latter of which Carola describes as an "electronic experience." Covering techno in all subgenres but maintaining an exceptional standard of quality and innovation, Carola was also playing a balancing act with his many labels - Design, 1000, Zenit and Question. 2004 saw the launches of Do.Mi.No, Domestic Minimal Noise. Since then, four of the twelve planned releases have emerged to high acclaim. In 2010 Cocoon label boss Sven Väth asked him to mix the Frankfurt based label’s Party Animals CD alongside Nick Curly, which took Carola's dj taste and skills to new heights.
The harder techno sound he’d been pushing for so many years had elevated him to the scene’s top tier, but inside he harbored a burning desire for musical upheaval; a lust for refinement, to slow things down and get back to the groove. One thing that’s been a constant factor of Marco Carola’s releases over the last couple of years is the ability to seamlessly integrate breaks and beats into his productions, giving them an unmistakeable feel that sets him apart from his contemporaries.
