Silence is Golden

Vocals and instruments that’s music right? Well not always as many electronic artists put out songs without any sign of a vocal over the top of the music, and this sits well with me as not all songs especially dance music need a vocal. Many songs come out through the club scene receive massive applause only then to be ruined in my opinion by lacklustre lyrics which were never meant to be sung with the beat in question and what’s worse is that it really shows . Take for example the big summer tune by the Swedish House Mafia a couple of years ago “one” this tune was massive and it destroyed dance floors all over the world only then to be made worse by a bad vocal over the top . It wasn’t that the vocal was out of key it was that it was unnecessary, however in the eyes of the record label and radio it often needs a vocal to be a hit, something people can sing along too on their way to work. Have a listen here to the song without a vocal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1EOGzzLy8U and now with the vocal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkQ5rEJaTmk see what you think. Of course as mentioned above it’s not always the artists decision whether the track is doctored or not, often these tunes are a victim of their own success and when a track gets big on the radio it’s almost begging for a vocal to be put on top. However I feel this is perhaps a bit disrespectful towards the artist’s view of the song if they never intended the song to have vocals on the track. However sometimes a track can be dramatically enhanced by the addition of some good artists singing on top , take for example David Guetta’s Little Bad Girl featuring Taio Cruz and Ludacris this song proved to be a massive summer smash and was originally intended to be a instrumental ( personally I think the instrumental is better ) . I will leave you with the thought that should an artist be able to at the end of the day choose whether a track gets a vocal or not? And do labels and radio have too much influence over artist creation.
