Miming DJ's

DJ magazine currently ranks French DJ Producer David Guetta as No 1 in the world however; some fans have become disillusioned with his recent sets it would seem the DJ spends more time with his hands in the air singing along to his own tracks than he does mixing tracks back and forth. Some have even taken to analysing close up shots of his turntables whilst he is playing, see youtube for such examples. Another noteworthy DJ who appears to be taking a break from full on mixing is the Swedish House Mafias Steve Angello , who in a recent gig barely seemed to touch the mixer or the turntables , again a video on the ever so trustworthy youtube appeared to highlight his lack of mixing . However whether or not the crimes (if they are a crime) are true or false is not the main concern at the moment , the issue is perhaps more of whether or not the public deems this to be a problem when they go to see a DJ or electronic act , the argument over live performers miming has been a tried and tested means of separating the real talent from those who choose only to sing when the mixing desk is there to help them sound better . However electronic music by definition is pre recorded, of course the best DJ’s have always been able to blend layer upon layer of tracks into a seamless movement, but perhaps this skill is being lost as the scene grows and develops and the demand for gigs mounts up, DJ’s have always been known for jamming gig after gig, is it so wrong for them once in a while to take a break and play a pre – recorded mix? After all they would have had to mix it prior to the gig in the first place, perhaps ultimately it comes down to how much they value their craft and their fans and the size of their success, I just hope when I step on to the dance floor this weekend the DJ is actually mixing and not just singing along like it’s a karaoke competition.
