Four Youths Saved From Frozen Pond In North Suburb

Thursday 23rd February 2012 | Osh

Last week four youngsters were trapped when the ice gave way in a pond off Third Lake, where children can normally play and skate without any problems.  Robert George, whose house was near the area said that the ice had been thin this winter and was among the Mariner’s Cove resident who found themselves suddenly in rescue mode.

He said he was playing on his computer when his children yelled that someone fell through the ice.  ‘I ran out, dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, and saw that two of them were out a way and two others were closer.’  There were some adults trying to throw rope, which came from Izabela Sepein’s garage who also helped.  The residents pulled them in with the rope and the youngest one was able to crawl out but the fourth one was still stuck.
Robert tied the rope around his waist and climbed over the ice and started swimming.  The boy was about 50 feet out and his legs were getting numb so was unable to get out by himself.
The victims involved were three boys, one 16 and two 9 year olds, and a 12 year old girl.  They were checked at the scene and are all safe.
