Migraine sufferers in their thousands could benefit from Botox jabs on the NHS, providing an official review gives the go- ahead.
The injections, which are famously used by many celebrities for anti- wrinkle treatment, can halve the effects of chronic migraine. The therapy uses a purified version of the botullnum toxin A and blocks overactive nerve impulses which trigger excessive muscle contractions. It can break the cycle of chronic headaches, therefore acting as a preventative treatment.
Botox was made by Allergan and two years ago and licensed for use on migraines. According to the charity Migraine Action, patients pay £400- £600 a time for private treatment. However, it has not been approved yet for funding because so far there is ‘insufficient evidence.’
Joanna Hamilton- Colclough, director of Migraine Action said using Botox for her headaches has ‘absolutely transformed my life.’
A decision is expected in June.
