Whitney Houston Tribute

Sunday 12th February 2012 | Osh

Reported by nearly every news broadcaster yesterday (and us, of course!), tributes continue today and so we take a look at some of the highlights of Whitney Elizabeth Houston's life.

She was born on 9th August 1963 and blessed with such a gift that left many envious. She sold more records and received many awards (including six Grammy's!), which is more than almost any other female artist of the 20th century. A trained gospel singer whose success was at its highest in the 90's, Whitney wowed time and time again with her technique and polished performances. It was her 1992 cover of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You that was her biggest hit as it sold 12 million copies. Total record sales for Miss Houston topped 170 million, placing her in an elite group of female superstars. Not only was she elite, she was the first black woman to break through on MTV. Through the constant coverage she received she became an icon for many.

Other career highlights include her backing vocals on Chaka Khan's I'm Every Woman in 1978 at age 15 and she was the second black woman to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine. She also broke the greatest record of No 1 singles in a row (beating The Beatles). In her film appearences, she's most remembered for playing Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard and the sountrack became the biggest selling album of her career! I Will Always Love You spent 14 weeks at No1 in the US! Of course, these achievements were great and will always be remembered. But her biggest and proudest achievement has to be her daughter Bobbi Kristina. Although Whitney's marriage to Bobby Brown was under the spotlight constantly (and of course, he was blamed for her instant downward spiral), from this, came Whitney's only child.

Our thoughts are with Bobbi Kristina, Whitney's mother and her two brothers, by whom she is survived.

RIP Whitney Houston. We will always love you!
