Extreme Exercise in 2012

These days a jog around the park just won’t cut it. Resolutions in mind, finding the most exciting way to get in shape seems to be top of everyone’s list this year, and many are ditching the treadmill in favour of activities such as mud running, hiking, triathlons and brutal obstacle courses. Half marathons are for amateurs. If you really want to push yourself, you’re talking about undergoing Tough Guy or Tough Mudder, where contestants contend with mud treks, ice baths, barbed wire and the occasional electric shock. For those that want something extreme but don’t fancy the prospect of tetanus and hypothermia there's always the ‘Iron Man’, an extended triathlon: a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile cycle - all a warm up for a gruelling 26.2 mile run to the finish line.
Celebrities are also getting on board with the trend. Jodie Marsh becoming a bodybuilder and David Walliams swimming the entire length of the Thames are two stark examples. But if your tastes lean more towards the unusual than the back-breaking, fear not; unicycle hockey, cheese chasing and, of course, the annual ‘Man vs. Horse’ marathon are all out there waiting to be entered. Stick to your resolution resolutely. Go the extra mile this year and set yourself a challenge. You'll be surprised by what you can achieve with some direction and a little self-belief.
