I Love Leeds

Every month we give you the scoop on one of our favourite UK cities!

This month The Guestlist Network are exploring Leeds, bringing you the what’s what and the where’s where of events in the city this November. Hailed by some as ‘the London of the North’, the Yorkshire metropolis can still find itself maligned by southerners as ‘too Northern’ but as any visitor will see that’s just hot air. For those intrepid enough to venture outside the M25, why not take your travel case up north for one of the great events coming up over the next weeks? Leave your ego behind because they can spot a southerner a mile off and have a knack for turning the snobbery joke on anyone unwise enough to bait them. If you’re a fan of great music and unpretentious partying, Leeds is a must see. Just don’t expect ice in your drink... for some strange reason it’s just not done.
Last time TGN was there Sven Väth was running the streets topless with a toy light sabre. The locals didn’t seem surprised at all…

Clubs in Leeds
Seeing as you Londoners don’t know a thing about clubbing in anywhere other than your sacred capital city, we’ve done all the hard work and put together a guide for a few of the best venues for nights out up in Leeds!

MINT
A tasteful selection of DJ’s across a range of genres

Once home to Cocoon kahuna Sven Väth and still hosting regular Cocoon nights to this day, Mint Club is easily one of the best venues for dance music in the UK. Presenting DJ’s, underground and mainstream, from across the spectrum of dance music there will most likely be something you love coming up in the near future. It comes equipped with the mighty Funktion One sound system and a Disco Panel lighting system, also featured at Watergate in Berlin. It’s the first light set-up of its kind in the UK and definitely worth seeing.

STINKY’S PEEPHOUSE
Underground DJ’s

Recently reverting to its rather interesting former name, the home of the legendary ‘Back to Basics’ club night, this Yorkshire landmark is a must visit. Playing the sounds of an impressive selection of resident DJ’s through a Funktion One system, it’s a mainstay in Yorkshire Clubland and has been for almost 20 years. With a sandpit and Ice cream van in the smoking area, the club has a vibe that shaves the years of its clientele making for a truly bonkers affair.

HALO
Student Nights

Housed in an old church in the centre of town and within walking distance from countless popular bars, this is a popular hangout for the cities insanely large student population. The décor is modern but they’ve kept the stained glass windows, which brings a celestial air to events. Don’t worry though; the church was decommissioned years ago so you don’t have to worry about God watching your every move.

THE BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB
Live Music

Hosting acts over the next month like Oneohtrix Point Never, Washed Out and Fools Gold; this little venue should be on your list if you’re for looking for a break from dance music. True to the city’s form, it still sports a cracking sound system and is situated close to the centre so it’s not going to be a quiet night but most likely a little less chaotic.

DISTRIKT
Eclectic music, cocktails and tapas with a Middle Eastern vibe

After opening in 2009 to impressive reviews, this is one of the more interesting tapas bars you’re likely to find anywhere. Musically the bar aligns itself with the underground, playing a varied mix of genres so you’re bound to find something you like. The focus is on their chef’s interest in foraged foods, a passion that he brings to his menu and with tapas starting at a fiver a dish the venue is well worth a visit.
