We caught up with Erick Morillo to chat about Subliminal Sessions, the much anticipated Subliminal Invasion this summer, and what’s it’s really like working with P.Diddy

Hey, how are you? How’s the season in Ibiza going?
Phenomenal! It’s been such a great season already, very busy, a lot of holiday makers, a lot of party people... It’s been absolutely amazing this summer, I love it I’ve been coming here for so many years. You’ve got the best of both worlds; you can chill on the beaches or go to some of the best clubs in the world with some of the biggest DJs in the world!

Subliminal Sessions will be running for its 11th consecutive year at Pacha in Ibiza; why do you think this night has been so successful?
For me it is my commitment to music; it’s about a good atmosphere and providing a place for people to get lost in the music. It shows that people really enjoy coming to hear me and my guests play. Over the last 11 years a lot of people have come through my events to host their own, like Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta among others.

Which guests will be joining you at your Subliminal Invasion nights for the rest of summer?
I’m really excited about having Danny Tenaglia. He’s gonna be playing with us on the 17th August and it’ll be the first time in many years so I’m really excited about that. Obviously we have a residency with Bassment Jaxx and Chuckie once a month...Harry Choo Choo Romero, Jose Nunez...the list goes on!

How did you become serious about DJ’ing?
Well it wasn’t until after I produced ‘I Like to Move It’ that I got to travel and go to Europe and England for the first time. That’s when I was really introduced to DJ culture as we know it today and really decided to become a DJ.

Who have been your influences?
People like Louie Vega, David Morales and Todd Terry really helped to shape who I am today.

You’ve obviously toured the whole world, do you have one favourite place?
For me it’s gotta be Ibiza; it’s the Dance music capital of the world and it’s just a great, spiritual place, but there are many wonderful places around the world like Brazil, Australia...South America as a whole is very special as well.

You celebrated your birthday in Miami, does it hold a lot of good memories for you?
Miami is my winter home, it’s very special to me. I love living in this climate; in December and January in Europe where I grew up it would be freezing but in Miami it’s like 90 degrees! It’s a very chilled place and a good place to call home.

What was it like working with P. Diddy?
Amazing. He’s such a hard worker and a great person, always with his eye on the big picture. He’s somebody I look up to and who pushes me to be all I can be, somebody I can call a friend now.

Cool, as the founder of Subliminal Records, what do you look for in an artist?
I look for talent, whether it’s a vocalist like Shawnee Taylor (which whom I’ve done a song, ‘Stronger’, which drops in the UK on August 9th) or a producer who has talent and is willing to put the time in to get records right. Nowadays with computers everybody’s a producer, everybody's a DJ; not many people take the time to finish records properly. I look for people who keep at it until they get it right.

Can you tell us a bit more about your new track ‘Stronger’?
Well myself and Eddie Thoneick (a drummer/producer/DJ) met a couple years ago and did a record last year called ‘Live your life’. We wrote it with Duane Harden and Shawnee Taylor and it really touched people. After that we decided to do another track and put ‘Stronger’ together; it came together really quickly and we knew we had something special.

So that’s one of the tracks from your album coming out in August?
Yeah, the album’s out on 2nd August, it’s a new compilation called Subliminal Invasion and it’s a snapshot of what I do in clubs today. It contains five exclusive tracks that have not  been released before; one of them is a remix by myself, Harry Choo Choo Romero and Jose Nunez with guest vocals from Craig David, and another is a track featuring Rachel Star called ‘We Are The Night’. It’s gonna be a big record this summer.

It sounds like you’ve been very busy!
Absolutely. I’ve also been working on an artists’ album that will probably come out at the end of this year and will include artists like Busta Rhymes, Craig David and Dizzee Rascal, so I’m really excited about the next six to eight months.

If you were invisible for a day what would you get up to?
Wow...I would go to the bank and rob all the money?

Well thank you very much for your time today and we hope to catch you in in Ibiza next month!
Fantastic, well hopefully I'll see you out there then!
