We chat to Riva Starr about his new album, his record label SNATCH! and his ideal collaboration
Ok, here I am hanging with the big man Riva Starr once again! How you doing, you good?
Woohoo! I’m good man, last time I saw you I was in Miami.
That’s right man, you were just about to come on after DJ Luciano. You tore it up man, people were going crazy!
I’m always nervous when I play with these big names. I think it’s good to keep that nervous feeling sometimes, to keep you on the edge, you know? It gets boring if you get used to it.
What have you been up to since Miami?
I’ve been all over the place trying to work on my new album. I’ve got a few new EPs out on my label, a remix EP...I did some remixes for Steve Angello, Barro Stella, Wiley and a few others.
I’m just pushing a few new producers on my label SNATCH! right now, which is going great.
Have you got the Wiley remix on your album?
No no, it’s on a festival EP on SNATCH!
Cool, do you know when the album is going to be ready?
I don’t know...it’s almost ready but I’m doing some collaborations so it takes a bit longer. I’m pretty satisfied with the whole thing, it’s pretty different from my previous one and there are some big, juicy collaborations!
When you started out you were putting music out for free on your blog, right?
Yeah, at the beginning I was just producing tracks and I was pretty unknown so it was easiest to just get some stuff out and say, “Hello, I’m Riva!”.
I hear that you have shifted 150 links of your festival EP?
Ah, that is so frustrating! I mean, I don’t mind giving stuff out for free, but I want people to understand that music must be bought. You can get some extra content for free if you like an artist, like a mix set or another version of a track, but if you want us to keep doing this job you need to buy music because we live from it!
So, I hear David Rodigan has been playing your stuff. How does it feel like to have other legends and playing your music?
Man, I’m so happy because the direction my next album is taking is more on the Indie side
of Electronic music. So I really love that Gilles Peterson, David Rodigan and other DJs are feeling my stuff.
Who would your dream collaboration be with?
Oh, Jim Morrisson - but he’s dead. I did a remix though!
So you are doing Eastern Electrics soon?
Yeah I cant wait, it should be fun. I’m playing in the ‘Made To Play’ room with Jesse Rose and Zombie Disco.
What one word would you use to describe the Riva sound?
Chunky!
So here’s a scenerio: you are exiled to a desert island. What 3 things would you bring?
I would take my girlfriend, electricity and my laptop! Haha!
If you were invisible for a day what would you do?
Sleep!
Okay thanks man, can’t wait to see you at Eastern Electrics!
Thanks for your time!
