Salerno, Italy
An exotic location a little closer to home

All we have to do is whisper the name Italy and the images that flood through our heads are the cascading ruins in ancient Rome, the floating city of Venice and the centre of to all our fashion desires, Milan. These three cities call tourists from all around the world, yet there is always one that goes amiss, the one that plays surrogate by bearing everything that makes Italy what it is: Salerno.

Location
Tucked behind Mount Vesuvius south of the Campania Region, Salerno is a treat off the beaten track. Join in with the locals at the bustling port or visit the cliffs on the Amalfi coast for a picture perfect moment; either way if you want traditional people, culture or mozzarella then this city is the heart of it all.

Culture
As you know Italy is renowned for its historical Roman Empire, but Salerno is also home to pre-Roman architecture. Take a day out to Cilento National Park where you’ll discover the remnants of the impressive Greek civilisation and really grasp the Hellenistic age by stepping foot in one of the largest monasteries of the country.

Adventure
Just off of the Salerno Gulf lies an island immersed in Tiberian villas, built in the first century of the Roman civilisation. The isle of Capri is home to the Villa of Jupiter (the most impressive of all the villas) which can only be accessed by foot, so pull on your walking shoes and follow the meandering paths ‘til you reach the temple, standing proudly on the highest point of the island.

Taste
Without a doubt, a stone baked pizza wouldn’t go amiss during your stay in Italy, but before you go take yourself to one of Salerno’s traditional family-run dairy farms for a taste of fresh buffalo mozzarella. Eat it fresh out of the bag with the juices still flowing; it might not sound appealing but get stuck in, and do it like they do in the south.
