Event Review: Jasper James, Moodymann & Jackmaster @ XOYO 09/08/2014

It was clear that Moodymann's reputation had preceeded him for this landmark night at XOYO - the huge queue outside the club all night and packed-out dancefloor proved that despite his confrontational and sometimes elusive public persona, the obvious talent of Moodymann is enough to garner respect across generations. Having began his trade in Detroit record stores in the mid-nineties, Moodymann showcased his years of experience and knowledge by spinning a set that spanned from classic house, techno, disco and soul on vinyls. The fishing net he was wearing over his face with his hood up somehow only further contributed his general aura of intrigue. It was a massive journey of a set and if you ever have the chance to see this living legend play you have to take it!
The love and respect Jackmaster had for Moodymann was evident, hugging him as he stepped up to take over the decks at 3am. After the eclectisism of the Detroit master's set, Jackmaster chose to switch things up with a straight-up, no-nonense jacking house set to draw the night towards a climatic end - the floors were shaking, sweat was dripping, and the dancefloor remained resolutely packed even as we were leaving at past 4am.The Glaswegian more than proved his worth as XOYO's third resident and is sure to continue to deliver, thanks to his unique approach to reading and reacting off a crowd. He was joined on the decks by fellow Glasgow resident Jasper James, a young upcoming DJ/producer who had more than lived up to the tough task of warming up for Moodymann earlier in the night. He's currently gearing up for a debut EP and frequently tours and collaborates with Jackmaster - tonight he proved that we will surely be hearing a lot more from him very soon.
It's hard to say this with all of the stellar line-ups XOYO have managed to book, but we would be tempted to say this could have been THE night of the Jackmaster residency - the energy and love in the room was unreal!
