Album of the Month - Lone: Reality Testing

House | Wednesday 2nd July 2014 |

It's been 2 years since the release of the Lone's hugely succesful Galaxy Gardens album, but his next LP certainly doesn't disappoint.

Rather than sticking to his winning formula, or attempting a complete image revamp, Lone's Reality Testing is more like an upgrade. More considered and sleek, this is an electronic album which is less about rave and more about hip-hop - a sound that has influenced Lone from an early age.

Instead of wheeling out the guest vocalists like so many of today's producers, this album rests entirely on the sheer inventiveness of its creator - it doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to get radio time, yet these tracks are just as suited for relaxed summer days as they are for the dancefloor.

Tracks such as Aurora Northern Quarter and Restless City are essentially comprised of typically house sounds but with swinging, hip-hop drums. In a press release, Lone has stated “I wanted to make an album that had both hip-hop and house beats, but that weren’t completely different from each other, that shared the same sort of vibe. I love the idea of two things sat side by side, but instead of it seeming like they’re complete opposites, [it's more that] those two things could almost be the same thing.” - and this is exactly what he does.

Regardless of musical expertise, one thing that really makes this album irresistible is its summery, upbeat vibes.
