Warehouse destroyed in Enfield held stock for 165 independent labels.

Anybody who has turned on the news, opened a paper or logged into Twitter over the past few days will know about the riots across London. Last night (Monday 8th) saw the most dramatic rioting since the 80’s and culminated in a massive fire at a distribution warehouse in Enfield. The warehouse belonged to PIAS distribution and contained stock of around 165 British independent labels. Those affected include Rough Trade, Ninja Tune, Domino and Warp. All together it covers nearly every important record label across the country.

Among the artists directly affected is Toddla T who took to Twitter to say “lots of my albums got bun last night in the pias warehouse .. but i still got my gaff and business. its nothing compared to what others lost”. He is due to to release his new album Watch Me Dance on August 22nd. It is proving to be a difficult album launch for Toddla as it was also leaked by a journalist in July.

Sunday Best, Rob Da Bank’s label has also been severely affected by the fire. His Twitter reads ‘so looks like all our Sunday Best stock went up in flames last night in the PIAS blaze :(“.

The true extent of the impact that the fire has had is still unknown but what is obvious is how hard it will be for the smaller record labels to recover from this in an already declining industry. It is a sad time for the independent music industry and a sad time for London and the rest of the UK.
