Slave to the Rave.

By Celia Garforth

Monday evening, knackered and nursing a heavy-weekend comedown. A sober sweaty rave is hardly the first thing you’d prescribe, but Soho-based Gym Box disagrees.  Approaching fitness with tongue-firmly-in-cheek, their range of alternative exercise classes throws a light-hearted spin on what’s often a chore.  And Mondays are all about The Rave.

Boldly billed as ‘the most fun you can have short of giving it large in a laser-lit farmer’s field with a 200 decibel PA system and a craving for Evian’, this self-styled Rave had a lot to live up to. Sceptical? Definitely.

But sometimes words must be eaten. Trudging through the doors, it’s clear that this is not your usual House of Pain. The jeans-clad staff ooze cool, the funky neon strip lights are dimmed, the décor industrial minimalist, the members hot and honed. In fact, the only excess phat is provided by the resident DJ’s beats.

So it came as little surprise when a mini trampoline and glow sticks were issued as standard before kicking off The Rave. ‘Everyone happy with their colours? Let’s get stuck in!’ And with a rush of nineties happy hardcore, the madness began.

Bouncing around the darkened studio like a hyperactive Ritalin-deprived kid, all you could see were flailing glow sticks, frenzied lasers and euphoric grins (not gurns). Despite the lack of social lube, inhibitions were cast aside in this psytrance fest of jumping, jacking, kicking, chopping and freestyling. Evidently, leaping around like a demented, UV-wielding twat was all par for the course here, and it was liberating in the extreme.

As the endorphins flowed, the smiles widened. Happy chemicals the natural way, a reminder that music and dancing has its own buzz that’s got nothing to do with extracurriculars. Forty-five minutes later, sweat-soaked and panting, the Monday blues were all but forgotten.

No smilees perhaps, but a very big grin.

Fancy The Rave?  How about Boob Aerobics, Chav Fighting, or a Stiletto Workout perhaps?  Visit gymbox.co.uk for details.
