DJ Yoda Interview @ Relentless House Party Tour

House | Tuesday 17th December 2013 | Osh

We caught up with hip-hop turntablist DJ Yoda before his #RelentlessLoops premier set at Brightons newest multi purpose venue 'The Haunt'.

So your about to go on stage soon, do you have any pre ritual gigs we should know about?

I’m like the opposite of pre-ritual. I’m all about relaxing before hand It doesn’t matter what is going on I just wonder on and start performing.

Wow so 2013 has been a huge year for you, do you have any high lights you can tell us about?

It’s been crazy yeah! What just blows my mind is even after all the years I have been doing this I still get freaked out that I’ve been to places like China this year.

So what’s it like performing in China? Is every one as aware of your music as they are here?

Its different everywhere I go, even the different cities I go to within China. I play all across Asia and Australia, everywhere is different that’s my favourite thing about it I'm just getting to experience a different city every week, and I feel really happy about that.

So you released your album chop suey this year as well

And my mixtape as well! And the how to cut Asian edition, so I released an album and a mixtape this year.

So are you happy with the way these have been received?

Really happy yeah, the way that albums are received is a weird one for me because I try and have this attitude when I’m making it of like 'I don’t care what people are going to think', because that’s the only way I know how to make it and if it makes me pleased I just have to stop there and see how it goes, so then you throw it out there and see what happens. And lucky its been really well received.. (Laughs)

Looking forward to 2014 then, can we expect big things from you? Any breaks? Or is it full steam ahead?

NO BREAKS! No, never breaks! Although, I am doing this extended Australia tour coming up so im sure in-between the gigs you’ll find me by the beach, but yeah another album is the plan and hopefully this one will happen a lot quicker then the last one, the chop suey one took a long time coming together.

Something like 5 or so years wasn’t it?

Yeah, not because I was working so intensely on it, it was the opposite. I was just putting in like one afternoon a week, which is not really intense as you should work on a album so I want to try and flip that round for next year and really just work intensely and get an album out quickly.

So you mentioned your Australia tour, your in Sydney for new year?

Yeah, I will be yeah.

So your looking forward to that tour then?

Yeah of course, I mean that’s going to be awesome this time of the year to be able to go and escape the winter, especially when you have nights like tonight in Brighton when its just miserably cold. I have got a residency at the Espy in Stkilda, Melbourne so I’m going to be back there like four times over the Australian summer.

So tonight were on the last leg of the Relentless Energy house party tour. I hear your debuting a pretty interesting track for us tonight

Yeah so Relentless got me to create an audio visual track made entirely out of peoples loops that they recorded and sent in using vine with the hash tag #relentlessloops. It's like totally random stuff; people skateboarding, plates, matches, banging on stuff. Then I had this challenge of 'can you make a track' so I have been working on it and I’m really pleased with what’s come together, considering it's such random stuff and I’m using other peoples material. I was like I don’t know how this is going to go, I didn’t know how bad this stuff was going to be, but I put it together and I’m going to play it tonight. I think it really actually knocks in the club as well which was pretty tough to get to that point, so yeah I’m really happy with it.

So do you think that social media services like vine will play a more important role in music creation in the future?

I think It already is in a way yeah. There’s this level of communication between the people creating stuff and the people who are listening that never existed before so not to exploit that seems crazy, it seems to make complete sense.

Thanks for your time, good luck with your set.

Thanks man, I’m going to go get ready now.
