After the excitement caused during her last award show performance, it seems the singer has no intention of calming down her act. While on stage at the MTV Europe Music Awards on 10th November, she retrieved a hand rolled cigarette, which, due to the Deutsch location, most believe to have been a joint, and lit up, not before twerking once again, this time with a black leather clad dwarf. It may be no coincidence that just three years after the world watched her use a bong for the first time, she’s back, attempting to prove that she’s not the innocent kid who made her famous.
It isn’t unknown for singers these days to be so motivated by the purpose of shocking their audience, however it would appear that to Cyrus, it’s not only a bid for popularity, but also a way of asserting her own adulthood in an industry that still remembers her as Hannah Montana. While, say, Gaga’s ever surprising outfits are an expression of her own peculiar identity, Miley’s on and offstage outbursts have a constant theme of rebellion and teen angst, which might actually be undermining her search for a fully grown public persona. On the other hand, maybe she’s just having a good time.
From a wardrobe point of view, Miley was no less inspired to make a statement. Wearing the faces of Tupac and Notorious B.I.G., with the words ‘Please stop the violence’ around the thigh length hem, the singer looks pretty proud of her public life right now, which, I guess, is really all that matters.
