University of Dub, teachings of love, unity, and of course, great music

Other | Monday 7th October 2013 | Noam

There is nothing more exciting for me than the monthly sound-system clash session at The Scala (King’s Cross). Since I first discovered this event last year around the same period, I’ve been attending nearly every time without fail.

The first thing you notice when you get there, is the huge diversity of people showing up to enjoy a tremendously good, long night (10pm-6am) of positive vibrations and reggae music.

The message of unity is clear. Huge amounts of flags are hung up all over the place.

As you walk into the lobby, the smell of appetising Caribbean food fills your nose, whilst the sound of the walls trembling under the pressure of the roaring bass fills your ears. You can also spot a few vinyl/CD/bits and bobs vendors with a good selection of music and Rasta wear, cloakroom and bar. Every step you take on the staircase that leads to the main room, brings you closer to hammering bass lines and lively beats.

The room itself is spacious enough, with old school style Sound Systems spread out to ensure optimum use of the acoustics. They also have a very convivial smoking area where people from all nationalitie, all backgrounds meet and share the pleasure of being there. In terms of music, the almighty Aba Shanti I, who hosts the event, brings all the best Sound Systems together for a fantastic sound clash in a spirit of love and respect. Every session is magical and unique. For all the reggae lovers, and people looking for a different, chilled out, reinvigorating night in London, University of Dub @ Scala is a must.
