Salvatore Ferragamo and Orange Fiber create the world's first citrus based fabric

Other | Monday 12th June 2017 | Lorna

From H&M’s Conscious Collection to Zara’s recent use of recycled wool and organic cotton, major fashion brands are jumping on the sustainability bandwagon.

One brand doing things a little differently is Salvatore Ferragamo, who have launched a collection using citrus-based fabric. They collaborated with Orange Fiber, an Italian company who create fabrics from citrus juice by-products.

Hopefully, this will put an end to the 70,000 tonnes of citrus waste produced in Italy each year!

According to the Orange Fiber website, the Spring/Summer 2017 collection features “ethereal, breezy pieces” that are “beautifully constructed with the softest of fabrics for a renewed wearing experience”, with prints by Italian designer Mario Trimarchi.

Though it doesn’t come cheap - this innovative process shows us just what can be done with the food waste we produce on a day to day basis, and we hope, other fashion brands will follow in the footsteps of Salvatore Ferragamo and Orange Fiber.

More information can be found on the Orange Fiber site.
