Some Ruffians we just cannot bring ourselves to hate

Indie | Wednesday 18th September 2013 | Vittorio

They were born in Canada. They were born cool. They were Born Ruffians.

It all started out in a small basement in Toronto. In 2008 their first album, Red, Yellow and Blue, was released with two amazing singles: "Hummingbird" (as heard on E4's Skins) and "Foxes Mate for Life", which became something of an anthem for lovers of unique indie rock.

Now, after three years in the making (their second album, Say it, came out in 2010), they are back with a brand new album, Birthmarks. And luckily, Frontman Luke Lalonde, bassist Mitch Derosier, drummer Steven Hamelin and newly added guitarist Andy Lloyd have not lost their passion for happy noises, yet somehow dark lyrics. Indeed, "Dancing on the Edge of Our Graves", despite the title, reveals itself as quite the happy drum-heavy number, and "With Her Shadow" stresses the dark/light dichotomy which juxtaposes the dark themes of the song with the glittering voice of Lalonde.

Their gigs promise to be a spectacle of the catchy hooks and riffs that make the band what they are: a spectacular mess, a sparkling crackle of pleasant 'noises', filled with playfully contrasting vocals and drums. And they are coming to London!

While Thursday's concert is already sold out, you can find the tickets for their upcoming gig (Friday, 20th September) here: https://www.songkick.com/concerts/16792394-giant-drag-at-green-door-store.
