Five most important trends of SS13

1.Less is more: The cropped look
Cropped clothing has been around since the mid-80’s following Madonna’s music video to ‘Lucky Star’, in which she wore a cut-off mesh shirt (causing much controversy at the time). Since then, cropped t-shirts have been worn with a wide array of different clothing combinations, many people opting for high-waisted shorts, jeans or skirts to emphasise the effect of a higher and thinner waist. Now, cropping is applied to a huge number of clothing items like blouses, jeans and trousers, jumpers and even turtlenecks. This summer though, crop tops have been highly prominent, featuring in the collections of Prada, Miu Miu and Fendi.
2.Be bold: Graphic prints
Simple geometric prints have been used in clothing since the 1960’s, when a more flamboyant look came into fashion. These types of patterns come and go so sporadically, but during this lovely warm summer they have been pasted avidly onto flattering dresses, blouses and even simple shirts and presented beautifully by the likes of Louis Vuitton and Tom Ford.
3.Flower power: Floral prints
Floral patterns are nothing new for the spring/summer season and have been around for decades, but this season they have taken an even bigger stance in the spotlight. They have almost been paired up with the aforementioned graphic prints, and have become bigger, bolder and brighter. Some styles even take to the next level, featuring 3D flowers. These wonderful appliques add dimension, originality and most of all an endearing summer style to keep the floral theme fresh. Some blossoming examples are shown by Marc Jacobs and Valentino.
4.Pure and fresh: Dazzling whites
The all-white look can be fairly difficult to pull off, as it’s not the most convenient or practical of colours, but these pure whites have been almost blindingly prominent throughout this season, and they’ve been especially abundant in casual day-wear such as dresses, blouses, loose-fitting jumpers and shorts.
5.A hidden view: Mesh
Cut-outs and mesh have been one of the more surprising entrances this season, providing a delicate and flattering way of showing just the right amount of skin for a feminine and flirtatious look during the day. Teaming itself with dark colours, it can also provide a hint of gothic enigma to a statement blouse or dress, perfect for an elegant yet alluring look for the night. The mesh look is a very promising one after making such an effect this season with designers such as Alexander Wang and Belenciaga, and is likely to continue on for the next few years.
