Friday 19th July 2013 | Khadija
Just last month it was announced that designer duo Dolce & Gabbana, were found guilty of tax evasion and were both sentenced to serve two and a half years in prison. Today, the fashion powerhouse announced that they were temporarily closing down nine of their stores in Milan after being pilloried. The pair released a letter declaring their actions in response to unfair accusations and several attacks from the Italian Tax Police, the Public Prosecutor and the media.
In their letter released earlier on today, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana expressed:
'Finally, indignant with how we are being treated by the city of Milan, we have decided to close all our shops in the city (a total of nine retail stores) for the next three days starting today. We were born in Milan and have always been very grateful to this city. However, it must also be said that in the last 30 years we have given a great deal to this city: prestige and international visibility, jobs and economic development.'
In the letter, the pair also indicate they will compensate their 250 employees working at their 9 D&G branches in Milan despite the closing. They continue:
“Despite our passion and a sense of responsibility which push us to continue working with our usual dedication and drive, we are tired of being subjected to continuous slander and insults, which are detrimental to the serenity of our work place and distracting us from our work as designers.”
Dolce & Gabbana also address how the current situation has demotivated their staff. As a symbol of disdain, D&G stores in Milan will be shut for three days.
