"A lot of what happens to Bad Royale begins with either a joke or a mistake" - Guestlist interviews Bad Royale

House | Friday 18th August 2017 | Cristina

When an artist's email address provided on their official fan page is dicks@badroyale.com you know you'll be in for an interesting interview.

A group of 4 producers, inspired by Major Lazer, Bad Royale have just had their big break, signing to Polydor and playing world famous super festival Tomorrowland to a packed out crowd. Their latest video for the single 'All I Can Do'  (that you can check out below) is an incredible, humorous ode to Scott Pilgrim Vs The World - when they uploaded it to Facebook they captioned the post "This is what happens when a band gets a blank check from a label and told to make a music video..."

We caught up with the sensations themselves for a typical tongue in cheek interview.

Let’s start at the beginning, who are Bad Royale and where did you come from?

Bad Royale is made up of us four dudes, from all around the world who, with our powers combined is CAPTAIN PLAN.... this EDM boy band. On a serious note, we are Maor, Bruce, Elias and Kevin, we met as room mates and friends and one drunken night together spawned Bad Royale. The creation of it was all accident and was the beginning of a running joke that we eventually had to take seriously.

You make a mixture of Caribbean inspired Bass Music, why did you decide to start making this type of music? Have you been influenced by similar artists?

We started off by being heavily influenced by Major Lazer and what they were making. It wasn't really until we met Bunji Garlin that we had established a direction that became what our music is today. We had taken a trip to meet Bunji and work with him and his wife Fay-Ann, which turned into a two-week educational journey through the history and culture of the Caribbean. Bunji introduced us to local artists and one thing led to another and before you know it, we were working with anyone we could get in touch with.

As there’s 4 of you, how does the dynamic of the group work? Do you all have separate roles?

We all have our strengths and weaknesses but we all take part in every aspect of the group.

I heard one of you is an animator? Do you come up with all the designs for the group and how do you come up with new ideas?

Elias, he is a graphic designer, he came up with a lot of the art and branding you. Pretty much anything related to the brand image and art direction is him.

You’ve had a busy year with the release of ‘All I Can Do’ and signing to Polydor, how did that all come about?

It seems like a lot of what happens to Bad Royale begins with either a joke or a mistake. It was never a goal to sign to a major label, it was yet again, one thing led to another when joking around and a song and opportunity arose and we jumped on it and started taking it seriously.

You’ll also be playing at Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium this month, how are you feeling about that?

Yes, it is exciting, it is one of the most influential festivals in the world. It's hard to put into words what it feels like because it feels surreal especially when you see your name on the roster. Now must be the time to roll out our 'thank you' lists and start telling Mom and Dad thanks for all their help and support.

Where else can we see you perform live this year?

We have a tour with Henry Fong and Party Favor coming up to wrap up the end of this year, you can find all of our future dates on our website, badroyale.com. There are too many to list, but we hope to see as many new faces as we can on these upcoming tours!

Any advice for aspiring producers?
