Top 5 – Interesting rap covers of non-hip hop songs.
Yesterday I wrote an article on Hip Hop songs that had been covered. Today, I decided to see if there were rappers that had done covers of any songs outside of the world of hip hop. Finding these songs actually turned out to be far harder than I expected but after hours of trawling through the intenret I did manage to compile a list of the five most interesting examples.
5. Snoop Dogg – Sad but True (Metallica) At the MTV ‘Metallica icon’ event Snoop Dogg showed his respect by performing an interesting half rapped half sang rendition of ‘Sad But True’.
4. Puff Daddy – 'I’ll be missing you (Sting)'. 'I'll Be Missing You' is a Grammy Award Winning cover off Sting’s ‘I’ll Be Watching You’ recorded by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112, in memory of fellow Bad Boy Records artist Notorious B.I.G. who was murdered on March 9, 1997.
3. Busta Rhymes – 'This Means War' (Black Sabbath – Iron Man) Busta Rhymes puts an interesting twist on the Black Sabbath classic by rapping about loyalty and dependability. He even managed to get original Black Sabbath member Ozzy Osbourne to re-record a chorus.
2. Everlast & B-Real – 'All Along the Watchtower' (Bob Dylan) Cypress Hill’s B-Real teamed up with House of Pain’s Everlast for this brilliant cover. The juxtaposition of Everlast’s soulful chorus and guitar playing with B-Reals nasally aggressive rapping makes for a truly unique song.
1. Run DMC – 'Walk This Way' (Aerosmith). Thanks to the ingenious suggestion from producer Rick Rubin, Run DMC covered ‘Walk This Way’ getting Aerosmith members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry on the song. The Result: the first Rap-Rock fusion anthem going on to inspire hundreds of acts including Rage against the Machine and Limp Bizkit .
