Huge week in drum & bass. Everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Ram had an album sampler from Audio, Commix returned after years away, Playaz enlisted Drumsound & Bassline Smith, and so much more.
Audio - Beastmode Sampler [Ram]
Ram’s toughest, most brutal signee takes the final step before an album due later this year. The sample pack drops an original track “Overdose”. It’s classic Audio, a beat that’s roided up to the max, with murky bass tones and fierce kicks. In true Audio fashion expect the brutal force to be combined with truly perplexing sounds. Also featuring on the release is the Mefjus remix of Audio’s “Ultron”. A true juggernaut of his style, Mefjus rewires this track into a technical monster.
Commix - Generation 1 [Metalheadz]
The first drum & bass release from Commix in four years, and despite the break the powerful style hasn’t not eroded. The former duo, now solo act returns in top form with the first of a three part EP series. “Generation” is a relentless rumbling beat that’s easy to lose yourself in. “Deepdubs” is a little more relaxed and bewildering. Its deep bass tones rattle as the soft tones and sounds carry you blissfully through. Also up on the EP is the SpectraSoul remix of “Justified”, giving it a slick reworking.
Drumsound & Bassline Smith - Cobra [Playaz]
The Technique bosses bring their big room style to the infamous Playaz camp. It’s a bomb of a release, two straight up dancefloor tracks fast in pace and epic on the bass. The title track hits you with a raw drum beat and distorted bass tones, a hefty cut to drop down on the floors. “Testify” takes things a little more funky but don’t be fooled it still hammers down once it drops.
Serum - Bass Switch [Philly Blunt]
Another wicked couple of cuts from Bryan Gee’s planet V. This time it’s the turn of Philly Blunt to lay down the law, and that they do with two killer rolling jump up tracks courtesy of Serum. First up is Serum’s insane reworking of a Philly classic. He revamps Firefox & Glamour Gold’s “Bass Switch” with a little extra punch in the production. Following is an original cut from Serum entitled “Easy Does It”, a bouncy little beat that’ll keep you on your toes.
Full Kontakt - Minds Of Industrial EP [Formation]
Big sounds again from the Formation Records crew. Stepping up this time is the duo of Vaptor and Rapid collectively known as Full Kontakt. They have a four tracked EP that spans across all the sub genres in drum & bass. Opening with “Epica” the duo lay down a huge big room blaster. “Mini Overload” is a tech explosion that just keeps getting more intense. The boys take things a little deeper with their record “The Creeper”. They round off a huge EP with a collab with DJ SS & Cory Friesenhan sorting a relaxed liquid roller.
Erb N Dub - Speak & Spell [Technique]
It's another big room banger from Technique. Erb N Dub supplies the goods this time, with a records that has an incredible build up and equally brilliant drop. The repeated sample of ‘danger’ warns you of the impending drop, and a twisted countdown will ensure this tune is instantly recognisable on the floors. Once it drops, the punchy beat pounds as funny samples keep a quirky feel about this record.
Bassface Sascha & Feindsoul - Back To Basics [Higher Stakes]
Two titans in German drum & bass collide in a heavyweight release. Aptly named “Back To Basics” the producers fix up a classic jump up beat. The slick rolling beat gets super funky before the rude bleeping of jump up. Absolutely huge track from a huge collaboration.
J Kenzo - Skatta [Cosmic Bridge]
OM Unit’s label of weird and wonderful beats is back with a killer release from J Kenzo. The usual dubstepper produces two masterpieces combining the vibes and deep bass of dubstep with the melodies and samples from early drum & bass. “Skatta” is the perfect halftime beat, working sounds and samples together combined with jaw dropping drums. “Alight” follows and sounds directly from the early 90s jungle tekno scene.
Seba & Method One - Let’s Be Done With This [Samurai]
Seba teams up with Californian Method One for two sick deep cuts. “Let’s Be Done With This” is a dark and mysterious trip that echos through the darkness. On the flip side is the equally dark “Silicon Nature”. Perfectly crafting the eering sounds and riffs with subtle breaks and floating acid squeak.
Samy Nicks - Burial / Rum Droll [Amusement Audio]
Rolling in for it’s third release, Amusement Audio have Samy Nick’s first solo release. Two low end tracks, first up “Burial” a low end roller with so much texture though its vast layers of melodies and sounds. On a more jump up tip is “Rum Droll”, a clear cut punchy beat with the odd horn blowing here and there.
Bassface Sascha & Franksen - Jazz In Motion EP [Blu Saphir]
German drum & bass pioneer Bassface Sascha dropped another large release last week. This time teaming up with Franksen, they produce a very musical EP packed full of funky flavour. Cheeky jungle marinated liquid rollers with very funky basslines.
