The night tube - when will it arrive?

Other | Wednesday 27th January 2016 | Tom

The people of London have been waiting at the night tube platform for a while now and it still hasn't arrived. Will it ever arrive? Not anytime soon.

In mid 2014 TFL rather preemptively announced their plans for the running of a 24 hour, weekend tube service, but issues such as pay disputes, the inhibiting of nighttime maintenance work and noise factors have ground the plans to a steady halt, and now they don't look like they will be starting up for a while.

Like every issue that affects the people, the night tube is now being used as a political tool, with it being announced that there will be no service until after the May 2016 London Mayoral Election. Last year Boris Johnson stated 'this is something that the city of London has done without for 150 years. There's a very good deal on the table. I just hope that members of the Tube unions will get a chance to look at it.’

Of course, the night tubes will need someone at the controls which will mean longer weekend hours for the tube drivers, however, this remains a thorny issue as newly qualified tube drivers are earning a reported £50,000 a year.

When the night tube does start, trains will run 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays along the whole Jubilee and Victoria lines. There will also be partial service on the Central line, the Northern line and on the Piccadilly line.
