Zak Abel has already been songwriting for two years and is a self-taught guitarist and pianist. As someone who has been teaching themselves guitar for over a year and can just about bar chords, I can tell you that this is no small feat.
Collaboration with Gorgon City resulted in the acoustic, and relatively emotional, ‘Unmissable’, a track that could be called ‘unmissable’ (wahey). Abel also spent the last year touring Europe alongside Bondax.
The north London gem and singer/songwriter has smashed it with his track ‘These are the days’ from his EP ‘Joker Presents’, a collaboration with Bristol producer Joker, released in February of this year.
The easy going vocals and smooth beat give the listener a sense that good things are happening or are about to, for after all, ‘These are the days’. Abel’s sound is similar to a mix between Maverick Sabre, Mos Def, and Bonobo. It works.
The rest of the tracks featured on the EP such as ‘Wise Enough’, continue the feel good attitude of ‘These are the days’, with lyrics such as ‘I’ve fallen but I’ll hit the ground running’. It helps that he’s pretty beautiful too, not that it’s a factor, obviously. The kid isn’t even 20 and he’s apparently a bit of a g, signing his first record deal at 17.
The collaboration with Gorgon City to create the acoustic (and relatively emotional) ‘Unmissable’, created a track that, you guessed it, could be called ‘unmissable’ (wahey). Reminiscent of Rag ‘n bone man on a comedown, this one pulls on your heartstrings, with a melancholy melody and talks of ‘memories’ and ‘cold nights on December’.
The deep house version is much more ‘get up and go’, with less melancholy and more of a club vibe, with the music video featuring the moment two lovers lock eyes. Cute.
From ‘Unmissable’ to ‘Say Something’ it’s clear that Abel has conquered both acoustic and electronic soul, as well as deep house. We all love a bit of deep house.
Abel has also recently released the EP ‘One Hand on the future’, and with productions from artists such as Kaytranada and Karma Kid; it’s one to check out.
