The unmissable Yohji Yamamoto exhibition

Other | Friday 10th June 2011 | Osh

From 12 March to 10 July 2011, the London’s Victoria and Albert Museum present a retrospective of the work of Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. Thirsty years after the designer’s started out in Paris, the retrospective recounts his career through 80 items. The main exposition highlights key moments in Yamamoto's career by presenting scenes from fashion shows, performances, films and earlier solo exhibitions, including Correspondences (Florence, 2005); Juste des Vêtements (Paris 2005), and Dream Shop (Antwerp 2006). Each space takes its own meaning within the narrative of the exhibition which explores Yohji Yamamoto’s revolutionary design world.

The retrospective includes garments from the menswear collections which were not contained in earlier exhibitions. The items are shown on mannequins, none of which are protected by cabinets. Visitors are allowed to touch the display to appreciate the beauty of the designs and to feel the specificity of fabrics. Considering that these garments are rare now and would certainly not survive the inquisitive hands of thousands of visitors, the museum decided to reproduce the clothes for the exhibition. It is also possible to find Yamamoto creations in the following places:
- British Galleries Landing
- Norfolk House Music Room
- Looking onto the John Madejski Garden from the Hintze Sculpture Galleries
- Paintings Gallery
- Ceramics Collections
- Tapestry Gallery
