Oscar Brown Interview

House | Tuesday 14th May 2013 |

Having looked after the Low Slung brand for over two years and hosting the increasingly popular party ‘Strictly NO Techno’ at The London Fields Pub in Hackney, founder Oscar Brown has stepped out of the shadows to show the world that he is the driving force behind these prolific events. We caught up for a quick chat ahead of the Low Slung Field Day After Party (Unofficial) @ Basing House.

Can you give us a brief introduction and and background to Oscar Brown

Hello, OB is the alias I use for for all my gigs now, I use to DJ under the events name Low Slung, but I wanted to let that stand out on its own.

Can you sum up your sound in 5 words?

Tuneful, exciting, housey, rumbling, amazing.

What was the first piece of vinyl / CD you purchased?

Well the first vinyl was George Harrison "Got My Mind Set On You" when I was 7 years old. Then the first CD I think was Neneh Cherry, I won it in a Kit Kat competition I think I was about 9 years old.

Who were your musical influences growing up?

Well my sister used to play her music loud enough so I could hear it and she'd play albums kind of over and over until you got to know them regardless whether I liked them or not but usually I did. So I'd probably say my sister, it was mostly rock n roll in my teens.

Favourite producer at the moment and why?

Has to be without doubt RealConnoisseur! That boy is on fire!! His productions are unreal..Exactly the kinda stuff I'm into at the minute.

Tell us about Low Slung?

It's a party I started in east London just over two years ago, it's somewhere where I get to show off and share my taste in music. It's kinda grown somewhat from when I started and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes.

What kind of music can we expect to hear on the 25th May at Low Slung Field Day After Party (Unofficial) @ Basing House?

All the music I suppose centres around house music, whichever way you look at it. That’s the common thread throughout the night that ties it all in, some maybe more disco than others and some maybe more bass orientated but it all has the same starting point I suppose.

You have just completed a mix on Soundcloud Spring Bangers 13. Tell us a bit about the process of putting it together and choosing the tracks?

I want to encapsulate what I'm into at that point, it's just the tracks I've been hammering around that time. If I was to do a mix again it would be even newer stuff, it's all about the newness for me, I get bored quite easily and want to keep it fresh and exciting.

You also play at a party called Strictly No Techno at London Fields pub in Hackney. How did your involvement with this happen and can you tell us about this party?

Sure, this is just a bit of fun I really like The London Fields pub, they always have really good music on and I suppose I just wanted to be a part of it really. I have the 3rd SNT party on 28th June, and I can't wait for it, I want this party to grow and expand aswell just like Low Slung has.

So what is next for Oscar Brown and Low Slung? Can we look forward to any other parties this year?

Well obviously the Field Day After Party, Strictly No Techno at London Fields pub on 28th June and maybe another Low Slung in the summer. I'm also in the process of organising a larger event for the autumn with a big line up, so you should be hearing about that at the end of the summer. Production wise, I have some in the works and should sorted in the next few weeks, watch out for that :)
