Iggy Azalea interview

RnB/Hip Hop | Friday 26th April 2013 | Annalisa

Guestlist stopped by for a chat with one of the most exciting new artists around. Double XL’s first female, non-American, 2012 top ten, freshman rapper. The most popular Australian hip-hop recording artist ever, averaging at about 3 million YouTube views per video. A model represented by Wilhelmina Models, the new face of Levi jeans. She’s worked with Steve Aoki, toured with Rita Ora, now on tour with no doubt the greatest rapper alive, Nas. Executive produced by TI, a bombshell, a superstar in the making, awarded the 'Best Web-Born Artist' by O Online music awards, I’m here with Iggy Azalea, how you doing?

Hello! I liked that intro; it went on and on, and on!

It did take a while, but it’s you who’s done all that work, right?

I know! It’s like wow; I really did do all those things!

You’re from Sydney, right?

I’m not from Sydney! I don’t know why everybody thinks that! I’m from Mullumbimby. I’ve lived in L.A. almost three years now and it’s definitely home to me.

Throughout your life you said you’ve been influenced by many people, one of them being Tupac. Now, you said you can relate to Tupac?

Yeah! Man... Tupac is a crazy Gemini and so am I, so I totally get him when he says one thing and then contradicts himself! I’m like “I understand what you’re going through!”

So, what is your Gemini trait?

My Gemini trait? Hmmmm.... I always chase after things and then when I get them I run the other way. That's my Gemini trait, and by things I mean mainly men!

So when you get the men, that's it?

Yeah, I have my crushes, I have a new crush every week. My friends will be like; “Every week you think you're in love with somebody different!” But, I can't help it!

But for all the single guys and bi girls out there, are you single?

I'm very single!

Wow! So, you said you haven't done a sex tape because you're boring? Has that changed?

No! I don't really know...

So you'll still call yourself boring?

Hmmm, no, maybe! I'm pretty boring. I work and I'm on the road and my sex life compared to other people's sex life is very boring!

So at the moment it's more fun to watch other people's tapes! You're working with all these different kinds of people, is there anyone who has particularly fun to work with?

I really like working with Steve Aoki. He is working on his new album and he hit me up and asked if I wanted to do another song with him for it and we did Beat Down together and I really like working with him because I get to go to all the festivals he does! He's always headlining on these big festivals, we did EDC festival together in Las Vegas and we got to take a helicopter every night to the shows!

Yeah, he always goes out and pours champagne on the crowd and...

Yes, and he throws cakes in peoples faces and he has a song when he does a levitation act on stage. He flew Papa John's pizza in on a helicopter! You need to work with Steve, he is the funniest person.

What about you? You make it rain every show where you perform at!

I know! But I haven't been lately because I've been in Europe and it's too hard to change the currency every day! I'm like; what is this? Kroners, euros, pounds, I don't know! So I haven't been doing it that much lately.

You have a big show on tomorrow, right?

Yeah! At the O2 Arena!

Wow! That's gonna be a big show! Big venue, big artist...

Yes I know! I've been having such a good time on tour with Nas. He's like, really, really cool! I didn't know what to expect, because he's seems so quiet and I didn't know if we would really even talk much, but he's cool. I was saying the other day, behind his back, and then on Twitter, that his mole and my mole were friends and talk to each other, he just doesn't know it. When he's talking to me, I pretend like he's talking to my mole. I'm like “Hey Nas, what's up?” and he's like “Hey, what's up Iggy I'm so high!”.

Embarrassing moments that you'd like to share with us?

Hmm.... I fell on stage one time, but that was a while ago! It was in New York about a year ago. I tripped over the wedge speaker. My only other fear is vomiting on stage... I don't want to vomit on stage!

What's the oldest hip hop tune you can remember the words to?

I know the lyrics to “Rap City Blondie”! That's pretty old!

*Sings lyrics*

You spend some time getting it right, you said you wanted to get an album out that you felt confident that you could get across your self on it, so I'm assuming now you've reached that?

Yes! I have! I feel like with 'Work', hopefully people feel like it is a testament to me going in experimenting, I hope they can see all the little experiments I've done in my mix tapes last year and see the growth that has come from that, and the bits that I've taken and put into my single and that I'm sharing my journey and that I feel like it's the right time now.

Nice! And you've got that new classic tattoo, is that right?

Yes, just got it!

If you had a superpower, what superpower would you like to have and why?

I would like to fly! I sort of fly, but I don't flap I just glide. I just want to fly! I just want the feeling.

Well, it's gonna be big for you Iggy, and I appreciate you taking time of your busy schedule to come and say hello! Good luck tomorrow!
