Carnival Tabanca Review: Making up for missing T&T’s Carnival!

Thursday 7th March 2013 | Varala

Last Saturday was the night for Caribbean party people to relieve their Carnival Tabanca (heartache). Busspepper’s fete at Abacus did an excellent job of this, with the help of none other than DJ Markee.

The venue was an excellent choice, allowing for a cocktail-like social ambience on the ground floor with the dance floor downstairs. If you were really feeling the homesickness, there was local food on sale. For Trinis living in the UK, nothing beats the aroma of doubles, aloo pie, pholourie and fry bake at a fete.

Nothing other than non-stop vibes, of course! Special guest, DJ Private Ryan, did not disappoint. All the big hits of the season made their much anticipated debut at the party. Bunji Garlin’s ‘Differentology’ was even played once with the announcement ‘If you know this was Road March this year, let me hear you…”. Although Bunji Garlin pulled out of this year’s Road March (music competition), his song will forever be considered a winner by the countless Trinis who religiously sing along to it.

Carnival Tabanca played all this season’s big winners too: Machel Montano’s ‘Fog’ and ‘Float’ and Super Blue’s ‘Fantastic Friday’. Other favourites like Blaxx’s ‘Leh Go’ and Destra’s ‘Call My Name’ also kept the party going well into the morning.

But one of the best parts of any fete, as most Trinis will agree; is hearing all the old school soca and dancehall vibes. There was an absolutely classic session near the end of Carnival Tabanca, where the likes of Super Cat, Patra and T.O.K. all came out to play. Soca staples like ‘Band Of The Year’, ‘It’s Carnival’ and ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ couldn’t help but spread some nostalgia as well. Of course, the fete wouldn’t be complete without Benjai’s ‘Trini’, when all the flags came out for a patriotic wining session.

It was a much needed night for anyone who was suffering from Carnival tabanca. I already cannot wait for the next Busspepper fete!
