Annie Mac Presents 9/2/13
House | Monday 18th February 2013 | Cody
It was 11pm, Saturday the 9th February 2013. The purple lights from KOKO glowed on the long line of people filling the streets of Camden queuing for ‘Annie Mac Presents’ an event held regularly at KOKO by DJ Annie Mac playing the electronic, house and dubstep music she plays on her popular radio show to a live audience.
The sold out event began at 10pm and underground electronic/dubstep DJ, Monki, opened the event with a two hour set. The theatrical themed venue’s dance floor was filled with people. Ravers that couldn’t get to the dance floor occupied the balconies that overlooked the stage and began to dance and ‘skank’ there, it was apparent that a filled dance floor was not going to ruin anyone's night.
Monki's music has a variety of both electro and dubstep but works really well together, giving you itchy feet to start dancing! The MC encouraged the crowd to get involved and have a good time by going wild to the London born DJs tracks.
Several cashpoints are located inside of Koko, which you may be attracted to when you’re intoxicated and you may spend more than you can afford to, like I did, so be careful if you go. I learnt the hard way. There are also numerous bars situated on each of the floors that the huge venue has.
Mele took to the stage after Monki. The crowd were slightly tipsier than they were during the other set, including myself due to the rather pricey drinks. (I went for the ‘three skittle bombs for £9’ deal several times, resulting in me racing to drink them all so I didn’t have to carry them about with me all night, that was a bad idea and I spent all night dancing like a looney with a bunch of people I didn’t know.)
During this set the crowd were even more excited for Annie’s set and took the dance floor by storm dancing to Mele’s biggest hits Bema and Space jam. His tracks began slower paced ensuring that when the track picked up everyone would go wild.
Dusky were responsible for hyping the crowd up before the headliner, Annie Mac, who came on at 2am. This duo aim to compose electronic music influenced by anything from classical to jazz music to create a new sound in order to get people dancing which was certainly the case at Koko.
Finally at 2am, Annie Mac took to the stage to perform her one hour headline set. The heavily pregnant DJ danced along enthusiastically to the hits from her new album ‘Annie Mac Presents’ where Annie remixes her favourite tracks in the house and dubstep genres. Her album cover (An outline of Annie Mac's face and hair, her trademark wild curly hair is filled with multicolored pixels) lit up the stage and the crowd were going crazy, jumping and raving to their favourite tracks. The tunes included Julio Bashmore, Major Lazor, Knife Party, Deadmau5 and many other dance floor fillers.
The hyped up crowd continued to party when drum and bass duo Fred V & Grafix closed the show by doing an hour long set playing their best loved tunes; Major Happy, Purple Gates & White lies. Despite people leaving after Annies set, hundreds of people stayed to dance to the DJ’s and have a good time!
