Coming to LDN - The Bots
Thursday 14th February 2013 | Thisbe
Teenage guitar-strumming brothers The Bots are ready to show audiences in London what they’ve got. They’re very young, but they’ve got a great head start with some deserved publicity, and a sound that reminds us of The Gossip’s Standing in the Way of Control basement rock
“I’m just a kid and I’m just having fun, the old days are back and I’m just going for the run”, sings principle vocalist, Mikaiah Lei, before ruminating about it, and finally asserting “This ain’t like the old-days”. He’s right, and I think there’s a place for these two in times like ours. Ambitiously titled track ‘We Are Not Kids Anymore’, has a really fun Sex Pistols vibe about it. The lyrics are a little shallow in places, perhaps revealing their naivety, which of course can be forgiven, but there’s definitely something here.
Although brilliant, you might giggle a bit through their cover of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘ARTSTAR’, as it’s a little like a teenage tantrum, although Karen O didn’t sound anymore dignified! Personal favourite ‘Vanity’, is like revisiting a night out on the tiles as a minor, with its lyrics a touching reminder of what it’s like to be between ages 14-18, the duo’s respective ages. Front man Mikaiah describes himself as a “two-time Warped Tour Veteran”, and it’s true, they have covered a lot of ground in their five-year career; I mean, they’re three EP’s down! Amazingly, song writing brains Anaiah Lei, is still at high school, yet they have a raw magic about them that defies their years.
Really worth an open-minded listen. Once voices break and they develop their sound a bit bigger than they are young, I’ve got a feeling they’re gonna make it big. The Bots are something very special, in BETA.
Visiting us from across the pond on 28th May, to perform at London rock venue The Borderline: Tickets are available here. Don’t miss them!
