Dan Witz is a New York based street artist and oil painter who has been consistently active since the late 1970’s. He is also credited as being one of the pioneers of the street art movement. He has just opened a brand new exhibition, ‘Prisoners 2012-2013’ at Lazarides in London which features his paintings from his signature Mosh Pit , where figures intertwine and climb over one another with different stages of expressions during a mosh pit. Everything from pain to joy. Alongside the Prisoners collection this makes for a highly interesting visit to a gallery, especially for anyone who has ever found themselves crushed in a mosh pit and wondered what everyone’s faces look like.
For the Prisoners series, Witz has partnered with Amnesty International, the largest human rights organization in the world. Creating shockingly life-like depictions of subjects from amnesty international’s human rights campaigns he uses the trompe l’oeil technique layered with digital photography. Symbolic to the real life struggles of these imprisoned individuals, the subjects are portrayed with few clothes, masked or with their hands tied. Not only is this a highly topical exhibition, Witz is also extremely talented and if you can make it down this one isn’t to be missed. It is running until the 23rd February and entry is free so there is nothing stopping you.
