Mat Horne presents SESSION New Years Eve at Queen Of Hoxton – Review
Monday 7th January 2013 | Sophie
This New Years Eve saw Mat Horne host his much talked about club night SESSION at the Queen of Hoxton. Tickets were sold out well in advance, much to the disappointment of many East Londoners' seeking good music, a great atmosphere and some delectably inventive cocktails to help ring in the New Year!
In the heart of Shoreditch, the Queen of Hoxton is a firm favourite among East Londoner's. With the installation of a brand new Funktion One sound system, a stunning roof terrace and a well-stocked bar, it's not difficult to see why this venue has become so popular with the Shoreditch hipster crowd.
Arriving early to make the most of the evening, we spent the first couple of hours upstairs, where the atmosphere is of a relaxed bar, rather than a full-on night club. There are clusters of retro tables and chairs throughout, some of them conveniently bar height; perfect for propping your drink or yourself on. The window etchings, graffiti and retro furniture give the space an edgy feel, whilst the fairy lights, streamers and beautiful white tree decorations added that festive touch.
Later we headed downstairs to the basement to an already heaving dance-floor. The Queen's “alter ego”, as they call it themselves, acts as a dark, steamy alternative to the more chilled-out, spacious ground-floor. Essex foursome The Milk got the crowd bouncing with their funky blend of Motown and Northan soul. Later, DOES IT OFFEND YOU YEAH! (Bobby Bloomfield) gave a raucous performance of their best tracks plus some great mixes and breakdowns.
The highlight of the evening had to be the WigWamBam, a huge wigwam which as a NYE special played host to a silent disco with Mat Horne himself on the decks. Oh and the cocktails, we'd recommend the “Passion quila” (Fresh passion fruit, ginger and don julio blanco tequila shaken and served with the aroma of burnt cinnamon); a great combination of ingredients, which could also be used to sum up the night. Bravo Ma'am.
