Who is Nu:Tone?

Drum and Bass | Monday 24th December 2012 | Ewan

Brother of Logisitcs, known on the Drum and Bass scene as a man with effortless talent and limitless potential; Nu:Tone is your goto producer for smooth beats with that little extra something, be it a classic summer-time vocal or a melody that puts you in that feel-good mood. ‘Tone is always working on something, catchy and down-right Nu.

Born in 1976, Dan Gresham is currently signed to the legendary drum and bass label Hospital Records unsurprisingly. From the fresh age of 8 Dan was experimenting and playing on the piano, eventually joining the Jesus college Choir in Cambridge a year later. His relationship with the Drum and Bass genre came about whilst Dan was studying music at Durham University where Tone was running a radio show with a young John B. Sharing interests, they decided to share broadcasts and established a local club night called “Substance”. Eventually Dan moved on to engineering studio sessions with John which lead to an inevitable debut vinyl release under John’s Beta Recordings in 2001

Gaining a taste and a new-found hungry for Drum and Bass Dan released more material over the next two years under different labels, continuing to develop his musical style which consists of that ever-present groovy bassline and cheery melodies. Then in 2003 Dan had a lightbulb moment - He set up BrandNu Recordings as an outlet for collaborations with other Drum and Bass artists and also to promote those lesser known to the Drum and Bass scene, demonstrating a real passion and genuine desire to see the genre develop and grow. Other notable Drum and Bass artists who have release under the BrandNu recording label are Commix and Logitisics, who are also widely respected artists today, thanks in no small part to Mr.Tone.

It wouldn’t be until 2004 however until Tony Coleman, legendary Drum and Bass artist and founder of the iconic Hospital Records caught wind of this young talent’s potential and promptly signed him up to the label. Dan’s debut release on Hospital was titled The Future Sound of Cambridge which featured tracks by himself, Commix and Logistics. His first debut album titled Brave Nu World was released on March 14th by Hospital Records in 2005, which received a positive reception and prompted Dan to get working on a second album. However, it seems that Dan constantly has Drum and Bass ideas playing in his mind, as he continued to consistently release material not just on Hospital records, but also on Heathmans Mastering (which is now defunk since 2009)

Dan’s second full-length album was titled Back of Beyond and featured 13 tracks of uplifting, feet-moving liquid Drum and Bass, released in 2007 to a warm welcome by fans who were eager for more Nu:Tone. It would be another four years however until Dan gave fans another album, titled Words And Pictures; what with working on compilations, remixes and Djing at Hospitality nights and other places. Dan's always got his hands full it seems!
