Introducing: Only Real
Tuesday 18th December 2012 | Martin
Only Real is human evidence that rap can be a much more diverse and experimental form than most believe, and the boy is British. As a white guitarist and lyricist, many will want to create similarities between Niall Galvin (Only Real) and Plan B – who commenced his career with acoustic narratives. However, Galvin embraces everything electrical and creates psychedelic rap tracks with pop-rock beats, whilst incorporating a back-to-basics recording style.
Although Real’s online presence is limited, with only a few tracks available via YouTube and SoundCloud, his style and dynamism is unquestionable. ‘Backseat Kissers’ is a feel-good tune that incorporates Hot Chip-style electro allure with the positive vibes of an Asher Roth hit. ‘Cadillac Girl’ could pass a Pixies number, whilst ‘New Gold’ has all the sensibilities of Groove Armada at their most chilled. Only Real has a style that welds a wide variety of genres together, and because of that he is his own artist, a true individual.
