Album Of The Month: Crystal Castles- 'III'

Wednesday 21st November 2012 | Scott

Not particularly house but electro nonetheless, the latest offering from Crystal Castles, III, sees the Toronto duo’s beats as dark and twisted as ever- and probably much more so.

There is a bleak, unsettling feeling attached to Ethan and Alice’s latest, much akin to taking a wrong turn down a dark alleyway while experiencing a bad acid trip.

From the get go the duo’s trademark experimental sound connotes themes of pain and suffering, with Ethan’s synths creating a barren, ominous landscape and Alice’s vocals, well, yeah.

Things get a bit easier to deal with as the album wears on though and, after you’ve battled through the Plague, dealt with more Kerosene than would be ideal and endured the Wrath of God, a bit of Affection is rather welcome to say the least.

I’m aware that will mean absolutely nothing to you if you’re not familiar with the track listing so perhaps have a gander. Or don’t. Whatevs. (I have one more pun though. So, yeah.)

‘Tracks such as Insulin may offer solace for diabetics, but induce seizures in others.’

(Nice.)

In fact, you can get a pretty good grasp of what III’s about by the song titles (Child, I Will Hurt You/Pale Flesh/Sad Eyes).

But I suppose it IS 2012 and there IS an apocalypse upon us.

So, hey, have a listen and good luck with those natural disasters!

‘OH, GOD, THE MAYANS WERE RIGHT!’

Bonus track?
