Disco singer Donna Summer is posthumously nominated for Hall of Fame
Whether it’s in the true spirit of Rock n Roll or not, the late 70's disco diva Donna Summer has received a posthumous nomination for the Hall of Fame alongside more typical nominees like Deep Purple (they’re not already on there?!), Rush and, yes, Public Enemy. The fairly broad church of nominations shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise and should probably be taken with a pinch of salt as previous additions to the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame include The Supremes, Madonna and “poor man’s Cat Stevens” (I have my dad to thank for that one) Donovan.
The Hall of Fame has come under scrutiny in the past for being controlled by a bunch of people who know next to nothing about music and tend to gear the nominations towards their own personal tastes, rather than being representative of public opinion. But for the first time in its history, the public will get a say in the voting process. Although this could have an adverse effect, due to the public being notoriously fickle, and we could end up travelling the long and dangerous path towards One Direction’s induction to the Hall of Fame.
Donna Summer has been nominated before, but on previous occasions she had the advantage of being alive and able to pass comment and possibly influence decisions. Now that she has passed on, this could be her moment to, uh, ‘feel love’? Why not.
You can vote for your favourite nominee on Rolling Stone until the 5th December. If you were planning to vote for One Direction, unfortunately they don’t qualify as you need to have released your first single or album prior to 1987, by which time they hadn’t even been conceived. Ah, hindsight.
