Woodburner Day Festival

Tuesday 2nd October 2012 | Laura

Recently I had the chance to get into Woodburner Festival for free, as I was part of the catering crew. Actually, my friends were selling quiches and cakes for the audience of this London folk music festival that took place on the 29th September from 1pm to 11pm at St. Mary’s Old Church, in Stoke Newington. I was really glad to recognise this girl that I saw before in the Columbia Road flower market, who I now know is called Brooke Sharkey, playing this time in a proper ceremonial scenario with that amazing acoustic sound that only churches can offer. 11 bands such as Bard, John Langan Band, Whiskey Moon Face, Adam Beattie & The Consultants and Brilliant Corners were also performing in this Festival that brings together the best London’s folk bands.  Every group performed a few songs from their repertoires and the predominant instruments were guitars, violins, cellos and accordions, but we could also hear banjos, electric guitars and batteries, accompanied with soft and melodic voices that brought the audience from melancholy states with the ballads, to dance like crazy with gypsy-ish rhythms. Woodburner normally organizes underground acoustic folk nights in Hackney and beyond, so if you’re a folk fanatic, keep an eye on their website: http://woodburnermusic.co.uk/
