The Rage Against The Machine and former Audioslave guitarist has given the Occupy Wall Street movement a louder voice.
Tom Morello has been a vocal supporter of Occupy Wall Street since autumn last year, gigging as his alter-ego The Nightwatchman, including a performance to mark the campaign’s one year anniversary. However, he has now decided that the movement needs a rock anthem to back it up – and has created one, with a little help from some friends.
‘We Are the 99 Percent’ is an anthemic track that also features Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath and Serj Tankian from System of a Down, and is available to download for free from Morello and Tankian’s website. The title references the slogan of Occupy Wall Street, which refers to the idea that a tiny percentage of the country owns a massive percentage of the wealth. It features lyrics encouraging people to fight against this idea, and sends a message of striving for equality, along with Occupy Wall Street's aim of reducing the influence of corporations over politics. With enough publicity, the song could well help gain support for the cause
Both Presidential candidates have shown sympathy for the movement, but it remains to be seen whether either will actively try to work with them. Let's hope they give this awesome track a listen to help make up their minds.
