Want to get away? Try Edinburgh

It’s summer time, and therefore it’s holiday time. Sadly for many of us holiday time requires having money and some forward planning, and so the all-important ‘staycation’ has become an integral part of summer fun for the majority of us who are skint and pressed for time. However, if you really are itching to get away from home (and let’s face it, who isn’t?), you might want to consider travelling to another part of Britain.
If you’ve been paying attention for the last few weeks, then you may have noticed that there have been quite a few mentions of Edinburgh, particularly because at the moment, the Festival Fringe is taking place. If you’ve never been to the capital of our beloved Scotland, now is as good a time as ever, with a mass of entertainment (lots of it available to you for free!), a great atmosphere and beautiful weather guaranteed (I may have lied about the weather). However, if a carnival atmosphere doesn’t appeal to you, then the Fringe is not the only reason for visiting the capital. With beautiful scenery, (especially if you manage to brave Arthur’s seat, one of the most popular hill walking sites in Britain), plenty of history (most notably the castle where you can see the see the ‘stone of destiny’, which happens to be a large slab of granite that lots of important kings have sat on) and the chance to eat a deep fried mars bar, Edinburgh is the perfect getaway, even if it is only for a few days. With the city being small enough to navigate, but big enough to spend days exploring, there are tonnes of attractions, such as the Edinburgh Dungeons, ghost tours, Edinburgh Zoo and, my personal favourite, a tour around the underground and previously plague riddled ‘Real Mary King’s Close’. There’s no need to worry about travel either, with buses running regularly and quickly throughout the day and night.
So if you’re willing to slum it on a coach for a few hours, and stay in a hostel or with a friend, even for the most money conscious of us all Edinburgh is a perfect way to spend a day, a weekend or longer. Go check it out – you probably won’t get sunburnt either!
